Southwest Asia and North Africa

Hivos SWANA is dedicated to forging meaningful partnerships and fostering collaboration with diverse individuals and groups who share our vision of advancing democratic ideals and creating inclusive societies. Our central mission is to empower women in the political arena and advocate for the rights and aspirations of often-overlooked communities, including unemployed youth, ethnic and sexual minorities, refugees, and internally displaced persons. We are also resolutely committed to initiatives that uphold the principles of free expression and transparent accountability.

Active in the SWANA region since 2004, we have consistently addressed a range of critical challenges. These include combatting human rights violations, dismantling institutionalized gender inequalities, advocating for robust accountability mechanisms, and promoting personal freedoms. Nevertheless, our mission has evolved in response to changing circumstances. Economic hardships, typified by poverty, unemployment, and the decline of rural economies, have intersected with the profound impacts of climate change on the SWANA region.

In recognition of the urgent global need for sustainable solutions, Hivos SWANA has placed a strong emphasis on catalyzing the green economy within the region. We firmly believe that the transition to a green economy not only lessens climate change impacts but also offers tremendous potential for economic growth. So, many of our newer initiatives foster the creation of green jobs and empower individuals and communities to become key players in this transformative sector.
